Marsha Elam

Ceramic art has appealed to me all my adult life but it wasn’t until 2006 that I started playing with clay. It didn’t take long to become totally hooked. My work is done at the mid-fire range, cone 5/6. I love glazes and attempt to attain that perfect marriage of color, sheen and texture. I usually create relatively detailed, colorful sculptures. Before adventuring into ceramics, I created fiber art dolls.

Clay is a magic medium - I love how if feels in my hands, how a sculpture takes shape - not necessarily progressing as intended and ultimately how it looks emerging from the kiln. My style is still evolving, but I love whimsical themes, interesting faces, anthropomorphic characters and things that are a bit askew. Every so often the finished piece actually reflects my initial vision, but frequently the piece takes me on an adventure I hadn’t planned.
